Guns vs Cars

Which kills more people; guns or cars?

He'll take two, thanks

Ever wondered which kills more people? Well, we did and the answer is simple; cars. But that appears to be reversing (no pun intended). As you can see from the chart above, motor vehicle deaths have been on the decline while firearm related deaths have slowly risen over the past ten years. Our prediction is that trend will continue and gun deaths will exceed those involved with cars in the next five years.

Of course, the introduction of more and more driver automation and the eventual and inevitable rise of autonomous cars will make those numbers move even more dramatically.

  1. Interesting statistics. When I look at the chart, I wonder what happened in the car world in 2007 to cause that sudden drop. Whatever it was seems to have taken until 2009 to reach full effect, but the impact has remained since. So that counts out something simple, like fewer miles driven, due to the economic downturn. Any ideas?

  2. I was wondering exactly the same thing. My guess is the proliferation of safety gadgets and stuff (for lack of a better term) that has trickled down to even the cheapest models.

  3. It would be interesting to drill into the data further. One, plot gun deaths by suicide vs. homicide and other and two plot miles driven. I'm wondering if the Great Recession and Not So Great recovery has something to do with the drop in car deaths. I think there might even be a highway deaths per X miles driven stat. No doubt it's going down, but the crap economy from both tribes may have caused people to drive and crash less.

    1. Good points. "They" tell us that the US has recovered from the Great Recession, but other sources tell us that many people just gave up and stopped even looking for work. I suppose I am in that category. Up here in the Great White North, we lost most of our manufacturing, and the majority of our high-tech. The Gov't of the day was willing to let that happen, since they could run things on the revenue from oil. Now that the oil is selling at or below cost, that plan has failed, and there is nothing to fall back on. Economic activity is actually very low, but amazingly car sales are at an all-time high. I don't have stats about vehicle use up here. All very confusing....

  4. I don't get the impression that sales has much to do with the number of car deaths.

But that doesn't appear to be true for guns, where more sold seem to equate to more deaths.

I also can't think of a correlating progression in widespread gun safety the likes of ABS, air bags and other related automotive safety tech.
