Challenge: C/SUV With The Least Rear Legroom

Which 2016 mainstream CUV or SUV intended to seat 4-5 passengers currently sold in the American market has the least rear legroom? Our first thought would be the Audi Q3 with only 31.1 inches, which is significantly less than a MB GLA, Fiat 500X, Mazda CX-3, Subaru Crosstrek, Infiniti QX50 and Jeep Wrangler. That's awful but do you have a CUV or SUV with less legroom room for the rear passengers?

  1. I have no specific candidates to propose, but the rear seats of the smaller Jeep offerings have been veritable torture chambers for several generations. Ingress/egress is painful.

I wonder where the "Utility" part of CUV (or even many SUVs) was lost. CUVs run around 3600 lbs, but have limited passenger space, and cargo capacity that is compromised by styling (tapered roof lines and awkward hatch shapes).

  2. Jeeps were also my first thought. Though entry and exit may be painful (no doubt), but the measurement is nothing like that stupid Audi. And while we all know that these numbers are not necessarily connected to reality, the Jeeps are surprisingly roomy in comparison. The Wrangler is a bit of a mystery tho, with the possibility that I'm only seeing the 4-door, not the 2-door, measurements.

    Patriot - 39.4"
    Renegade - 35.1"
    Cherokee - 40.3"
    Compass - 39.4"
    Grand Cherokee - 38.6"
    Wrangler - 35.6"

Who at VW/Audi thought that a premium luxury CUV with such little rear legroom was a good idea...

The MINI Countryman ALL4 has 33.8", which is also horrific and stupid. That's another really bad one. Leave it to the Germans...for which we all get to pay a premium price for!

  3. Interesting to note that the Jeep with the worst rear legroom is a Fiat.

  4. Well, tradition has it that Fiats are designed as if one's arms and legs are approximately the same length. That has been a common complaint for generations. I can confirm that it was still the case in the 1990s, when I drive a Fiat Panda for a month in Europe.
