Derelict Miata (NA)
It looked like it was all there, so we assume it was abandoned
because of engine troubles or somebody went off to some new adventure and left
the car with mom and dad to store it. We’ll never know but there’s nothing
sadder than a forgotten sports car.
Original Mini
Stupidly, we didn’t get the year of this original Mini but
that’s because we were too busy staring at the horrific rocker panel rust. It
was terrible. Used as a promotional piece inside a restaurant, it had a sign on
it that read, “Not for sale”. No, really? We half expected the silverware to be
rusted, too.
BMW M3 (E93)
BMW owners are not known for creativity or levity.
Seriously, just look at the cars they chose to buy; the brand name starts with
the letters B and M. Yeah…but whoever this joker was, they were comparatively a
factory of yuks when they came up with this license plate. How unlike every other BMW owner...so when the opposite
is true, we have to award points for creativity here – that’s a good one.
2008 Chevrolet Corvette Indianapolis 500 Pace Car Edition
(C6)
This car caught our eye right away. We’re not terrifically
big ‘Vette fans but this one is impossible to miss. Our first thought was, “How…garish?”
but when the owner came out and fired it up, we forgot about the looks, it
sounded so great. We couldn’t resist talking to the guy and he turned out to be
a really super fellow. He and his wife (who we met later and was just as nice as he
was) were staying in the pet-friendly hotel room next to us with their cat.
They loved our dogs, who were with us, because it reminded them of theirs.
Turns out their house had just burned to the ground a couple of days ago, triggered by an electrical fire, taking everything they owned with it, including their two beloved dogs. Just an absolutely nightmare of a story. The only thing they had left was the Corvette, the cat and each other.

Back to the car; this one was one of only 500 produced in
2008, a low production number on the plate and it included a signature inside
the console from Emerson Fittipaldi. The owner bought it brand new and said
that out of all the Corvettes he’s owned, this one has been the most problematic
mechanically and electrically. He said the gremlins in this particular model
year are well known among ‘Vette owners and there just wasn’t much that can
be done about it. It had been hit twice, once in the rear where he’d just done
some touch-up to cover up the damage and once in the left front, where they had
to replace the fender, repaint the entire car and replace the graphics.
Despite their tragedy, these wonderful folks couldn’t have
been more pleasant to talk to and our thoughts will be with them in the coming
months ahead as they do their best to put their lives back together.
Only you can find the back story like you do.
ReplyDeleteNice posting, K2. I often try to remind Mrs. Bobinott that the car hobby is not so much about the cars, as it is about the people who love the cars.
ReplyDeleteAs for the humour of German car owners, I remember coming across an Audi, whose plate read "Doody". It took me a moment.....
Thanks for the kind words, the two of you.
ReplyDeleteI love that Audi plate! That's sharp. I wonder if there was a red-haired freckled fellow driving...?
