Desirable 2011 Model Year Cars

Recently, our pal Gianni posed the question, "Which 2011 model year car would you be interested in?" That's a great question! Here's the list we came up with.

Cadillac CTS-V wagon or coupe
Volvo V50
Ford Flex Ecoboost
Nissan GT-R
Lotus Exige
Jaguar XKR
Honda CR-Z
Chevrolet Aveo with nitrous (kidding)
Ford Transit Connect with nitrous (not kidding)
Mitsubishi Evo

...but we did so with trepidation. Our preference would be to wait another year and take advantage of the depreciation a bit more. How much depreciation are we talking? Well, here's the list again but with a calculation between years 4 and 5; the first number is the depreciation after year 4 and the second is year 5. This is all hypothetical, of course.

Cadillac CTS-V wagon ($13,888 vs $16,446) or coupe ($14,287 vs $16,918)
Volvo V50 ($6,474 vs $7,667)
Ford Flex Ecoboost ($8,683 vs $10,283)
Nissan GT-R ($20,470 vs $24,370)
Lotus Exige (n/a)
Jaguar XKR ($20,184 vs $23,903)
Honda CR-Z ($3,857 vs $4,567)
Chevrolet Aveo with nitrous (kidding)
Ford Transit Connect with nitrous (not kidding - n/a)
Mitsubishi Evo ($8,406 vs $9,954)

It's no surprise that the most expensive car is the vehicle that experiences the most depreciation. It's also not going to take anybody by surprise that the Honda CR-Z depreciates far less than all of the other cars at only $710(!). But to be perfectly frank, the fact that neither the Volvo V50 nor the Mitsuvishi Evo suffered much did make us do a double take. Who knew?

Which 2011 car would you like parked in your driveway?

  1. I see what you did there. Make mine a muscle car. My list, using your depreciation formula.

    ZR1...21199/25305
    Challenger SRT8...9025/10744
    Camaro SS...8024/9503
    AM Vantage...?
    GT500...11758/13923

Surprising that the Vette would lose so much value so quickly.

Assuming you can find a good candidate for purchase, it makes little sense not to wait a bit and save a significant amount of money.

  2. Call me insane but I want a XJ Supersport - 21,275 to 25,194. I thought that was some pretty awful depreciation until I took a look at the S65 AMG - 44,902 to 52,347! What a piece of expensive junk.

    1. Oh, good one. Me too, I'd love an XJ Supersport.
