1968-1975 Ford Escort Estate
In Europe, when the first Ford Escort faded away, it wasn't until a couple of years later that the nameplate reappeared. The first generation was no longer Anglia based and it was a huge hit. The fourth generation introduced a 5-door estate and there was a final generation after that, after which it became the Focus in 2005.

That loooooong side window is remarkable all in itself. We never had this generation of Escorts in Canada. After the Cortina disappeared around 1972 (IIRC), and the next euro-ish-thing we saw was the N.A. Escort in 1980. That generation of Escort sadly was pretty far from its euro cousins. But when the final gen arrived in 1990, things were much better. I had a 1995 Escort wagon for many years.
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting that you went from an Eacort to a Focus. Directly, or were there other cars in between?
DeleteActually the two wagons were in the fleet at the same time. I have a system where madame gets the newest (aka most reliable) car, and I adopt the one she is leaving behind. So the Escort was added to the fleet to replace a Lynx 5-door hatch. I was driving a Fairmont wagon. Madame liked the Escort so much that we broke the rule and I directly replaced the Fairmont with a 94 Mazda Protege. When the Protege could not be convinced to pas emissions (don't get me started....), we traded it in on the Focus wagon.
DeleteAt that point I adopted the Escort, and so we had two small ford wagons at once. I drove the Escort until Ford's year end clearance presented us with a too-good-to-pass-up opportunity at a new 2010 Focus sedan (who the hell ever asked for a Focus sedan?). At that point the Escort got turned in for cash-for-clunkers (that kind of broke my heart) and I adopted the 03 Focus wagon. And so the fleet remains to this day.
