1962-1982 Ford Cortina Estate

Over five generations, the Ford Cortina (snappily named after a ski resort) always had a station wagon variant. Here are the first and the last.

  1. Now you're talkin' my language! My first car was a used 1970 (Mark 2) Cortina. At the time, I would have loved a wagon, but I loved a GT more, and (guess what?) you could not have a GT wagon.

My Cortina taught me a huge amount about things mechanical, since it broke on a regular basis. It even brought my dad out of "mechanical retirement" when he and I rebuilt the engine in his lean-to garage. He had not handled plasti-gage in nearly 20 years.

That car was my first meeting with the fabulous and legendary Ford 1600 Kent engine, which was to become a huge part of my life for over 25 years. After my Gymkhana career in a Kent-powered Ford Anglia, I wound up building Kent race engines for Formula Fords.

On an historical and social level, I really enjoyed that first film. What a wonderful slice of life in Britain in the 1960s. Who knew that there was a British Shark Anglers' Club? Too bad about the shark.

    1. Thanks for your comment Bobinott and GREAT story! You really ought to be documenting these things, in detail...
