Matt Hummel; Finding Yourself in a Porsche 356

Okay, you caught me reminiscing. I didn't have one, my aunt did. I loved that car. She ended up abandoning it in our driveway, where it rotted away. Eventually, some Texan came and bought what was left. I was heartbroken.

  1. I remember seeing that car when I'd drive over to your house, the tires slowly going flat, the top deteriorating and the sun being baked by the SoCal sun. It was sad and depressing.

I also remember you coming out of the house and you'd forgotten to wear your pants.

  2. Love the sentiment in that video. So many people today don't understand the connection with cars that we once did.

  3. What a great film. Thanks K2, you really made my day!

Although I would have to think back a long way to try to remember the aspect of "being the real you" that Matt talks about, I have a more immediate understanding of the magic that comes with driving a car that has lived, and that shows its experience. My Citroen 2CV falls into the upper end of that range. It is in nice original shape, but carries the evidence of a life well-lived. As a result, I never fret (well, OK "rarely fret") about where I drive it. One scratch more or less will not degrade the car's overall condition. At the odd car show that I drop into, I have had people get up in my face about the condition, until I tell them that it is original. For most people, their attitude changes to one of interest and respect.

Like Matt, when I drive the car (which is often in the non-winter period) I feel that I am continuing the car's journey. Also like Matt, I get tremendous pleasure out of realizing that we really don't need much for a car to fully satisfy its role. Successful automotive minimalism is a revelation and a joy.

Many images from the film will stay with me, but just seeing that dusty 356 driving around on regular roads, still being used as transportation makes me very happy.
