88 Pontiac Fiero Formula Turbo

It's been too long since we pondered a Fiero. What's that you say? You don't want to? Too bad.

Cool headlight conversion. Photos: Craigslist
Here's the ad. Sadly, no interior or motor shots. In fact, the photos don't show much at all.

I have an 88 Pontiac Fiero Formula. It was swapped with a 3.4 v6. It also has a custom turbo kit. The trans is a 4 speed manual muncie trans. The car only has around 80k on it. Has MB Weapons with 255/35/18 rear and 225/40/17 front. Racing seats & harnesses inside. She's been sitting for a while I don't live in the area anymore moved to another state so can't really mess with it too much. The car makes around 450 rwhp. Car will need rear tires soon, battery, and possibly a turbo or could easily rebuild. Has a Turbonetics 58mm Turbo on it at the moment. Car will have to be towed out. Clean Title.

I am asking $4000 obo. Also will take trades. Interested in Dirt bikes nothing smaller than 250 4 stroke.

  1. 450 rwhp from a 3.4L? Wow! This could be fun, but the risk is in figuring out whether everything was done well or badly. Worth a chance at $2K, not feeling as comfortable at $4K.

  2. You were the first person that I knew of that did a motor swap in a Fiero. That was back in 1989 I think. Whatever happened to that car? It was awesome and forever changed how I looked at Fieros.

  3. I really have no idea. When I decided to do it, I'd blown up the Iron Duke. The fact that I'd surpassed the redline cutoff as many times as I did was actually a testament to how tough that engine actually was and I have no ill will towards it whatsoever. It did great, for what it was. But it was clear that the car needed a bit more horsepower and the stocker V6 wasn't the answer.

At the time, the only option was something completely custom. There were no kits, no adapters and no V8 Archie. There was literally no information and nobody else that I contacted had heard of a friend of a buddy who knew somebody who had a cousin that had done what I wanted to do.

A pal hooked me up with a nice Northstar and that's the reason why I chose it. Clearly, I was very scientific back then. Not. So I - I should say WE, because there were lots of other people who got pulled into the adventure - fabricated, faked and fanangled the whole shmagegy together and it turned out to be a weiner. I mean, winner.

Drove the pants off that car for about 6-7 years, then sold it to a German guy who was more interested in the look than the functional capabilities.

Everybody who rode or drove the car absolutely loved it - including you, if I remember your shouts of "Hoo! Hoo! Hoo!" correctly.

I've been told that my documentation of the process and sharing of information helped develop future V8 conversions, but I have no proof of that. I can't help but think that my rather random choice of a Northstar started something. But I often wonder if there had been a better option. I'd think something like the SR20DET Redtop would have been a better match, especially weight-wise (they were unobtainium at the time, tho). Still, the Northstar wasn't bad in that respect and you got the added benefit of instant power without lag.

    Long live the Fiero!

BTW, if I hear mention of GM doing a mid-engine 'Vette (C8 or otherwise), I'm gonna lose my Cheerios. It's just such BS. Why not resurrect the Fiero!?! If brands like AR, Fiat and the like can make a comeback, why not? It's not like those nameplates have such sterling reputations. Mid-engine Corvette...SHEESH.
