That must be true...or is it? Well, since you're a REVolutionary, you know that's a load of hogwash and that the world is full of car oysters.
Car = Freedom |
So here's your challenge; find a car on your local Craigslist for $500 (about 3 months work for our test subject) or less that's ready to roll and needs nothing to hit the streets. Now, we can only go on what the ad reads, which is always a mistake and we'll just agree to agree on that point; the truth may be and most likely is completely different. But let's go on the info put forth by the seller.
Here are two cars we found. We particularly like the old school Camry hatchback but would be very wary of rust.
1985 Toyota Camry; automatic, clean title. Good running car clean inside and out new tires. Heat and A/C that works. $500 obo
1999 Ford Taurus; Winter special. Good car for great price. Less than 130,000 miles. Clean title. $500
Let your fingers get to the searching and let's find this sad sack a car!
I spent a while looking this morning, but the hang up is "needs nothing". We have a mandatory vehicle safety inspection on transfer, and so far, the cheap cars all need work for inspection or to pass emissions (also required on transfer). I'll keep digging...
ReplyDeleteHa ha. I'm sure you will feel complete, when you do find one. ;-)
DeleteBTW, what's the minimum wage up there?
DeleteIn this province, it is $11.25. Of course, that is $Cdn.
DeleteI don't know how you find cars like this. Every time I look, I just find complete junk.
ReplyDeleteWell, this was MUCH harder than I expected. Given that the $Cdn is about $0.70 US, I worked with an $800 target. Here is all I found:
ReplyDelete1999 Corolla for $600US

Unknown year Saturn Ion (that the guy could not be bothered to sweep off the snow for the photo) for $560US

1998 Accord for $490US

2002 Sentra (maybe the best deal) for $560US
http://www.kijiji.ca/v-cars-trucks/ottawa/2002-nissan-sentra-gxe-sedan/1135861211?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true
Lots of "just needs one thing" ads, but that was not the game.
Fantastic finds, B. Is "Type" the same as "Title" status? You're right, that Sentra looks like a screaming deal. But I also like the 'Rolla you found, which was even cheaper and had even fewer miles. Neat that Kijiji shows the page views.
DeleteOkay, I'll be the party pooper here. How's the guy or gal supposed to afford insurance, fuel and maintenance if they're struggling to come up with $500? Sorry to be a DE-BAY Downer. Like my Yonderland reference, K2? What a hilarious show! Thx for turning me on to it.
ReplyDeleteYou're right N, as usual. Let's hope he or she gets a raise.
DeleteNessa, I agree with you. Operating a car is a VERY expensive proposition. I personally feel that it is something the keeps many people poor. When times are tough, live near public transport if possible, and accept that there will be less flexibility for a time. Get a car when the budget really allows that to be fitted in.
ReplyDeleteConsidering where I live, I thought this challenge would be a breeze. Turns out there's just more junk. But I did find these. I know which one you'd go for first, K2.

Ha! You know it. Great finds! I too am surprised how hard it was for you to find some good ones.
ReplyDeleteReminds me of the Smashing Pumpkins song...despite my lower wage, I am still just a rat in a cage...it goes like that, right?
