Cars Of The Future from 1948

  1. Neat stuff! Thanks for finding this. I think I had seen the three-wheeler before somewhere. I wonder about the claim that the central front wheel stabilizes the car in case of a blow-out. Has anyone out there driven a Robin Reliant with a blow-out? I would be curious to hear about the experience.

Personally, I really like the look of the second car in the film. I watched a couple of times, but I could not find or hear a make or model mentioned. Any ideas?

  2. Sigh. I can't tell you how many times I tried to get a conversation going about the Davis Divan on that OTHER blog (you know which one). But I never could get the know-it-alls to deign to gab about it. They didn't know anything about it so it didn't exist.

I think you're right. A blowout would be a very bad, bad thing.

I also was intrigued by the second car. I know nothing about it but would like to know more. I didn't catch who made it, if it was mentioned and I don't have anything in any of my books about it. It's a real weirdie.

  3. It took me a while, but I think I found a lead on that second car. This page:

    http://www.macsmotorcitygarage.com/2015/01/10/video-the-cars-of-the-future-for-1948/

    includes this note:

"Reader Paul Jaray has kindly identified the aluminum-skinned streamliner as Jack Norvell’s Chrysler-engined special, which was featured in workbench magazines in 1946"

Amazingly, here is a brief article from Popular Science, July 1946:

    1. Excellent detective work, B! So a one-off prototype, like the TASCO. There were/are 13 Divans, according to the Interwebz.

  4. Here is a better scan of that Popular Science article, which includes some other "original" motorized creations:
