Whazzat: GSM Flamingo

Built in Cape Town, South Africa (some production was carried out in the UK), the Glass Sport Motors (GSM) Flamingo was...

How many cars does this design remind you of?

...just the sort of thing the British did so well. South African GSM founders Bob van Niekirk and Willie Messiner went there and were inspired to create their company in 1958.

Stop licking the picture.

Penned by Rootes designer Verster de Wit, the fabulous fiberglass Flamingo was a new model for the company in 1962 and was designed to fit a Ford V6, which never materialized; there was a pair of Ford 4-bangers offered, instead.

The bigger engine, a 1.7 Taunus, sported 80 hp, a 0-60 in 11 seconds and a top speed of 112 mph. Suspension was coil sprung.

144 Flamingos were built up until 1965. Good luck finding one for sale in the US.
