1950 Nash Ambassador Airflyte

One of my favorite cars featured in Norm Mort's book American Station Wagons is the Nash Ambassador Airflyte. It was the manufacturer's attempt to create another variation on the station wagon theme. Yes, long before the word "crossover" existed to fool buyers into doing the right thing (buy a freakin' wagon!), automakers were doing just that. Leno is as annoying as ever and he doesn't even do a proper job of making the seats into a bed (doesn't finish the job), but this video really gives a great view of this wonderful utilitarian vehicle.

  1. Another gazillionaire with no concept of money. Or at least he's lost it, if he ever had it.

  2. Nice car, and nice video. Never seen one, so I have learned something today. Now may I be excused?

Personally, I enjoy Leno's videos. He always seems so enthusiastic about whatever car he is discussing. He seems able to appreciate pretty much anything with four wheels (and a few with three, or even two). I wonder what his days are like. Does he just show up and wander around in that collection?

  3. Current average NADA on this car is $12,850, which I suppose really is nothing to Leno.

    1. Yeah, when he was talking about 7-8K, I kind of agreed with his view. In the old car hobby, that is about as low as you can go these days. However $13K is getting into much more serious territory.

I have been saddened to watch the inflation that has hit the entire hobby. Not so long ago, you could still play for under $5K, with a good selection of Volvos, Saabs, small Brit sports cars, and even slightly-rough MGB-GTs.

I currently am watching an auction for a bone-stock Datsun 510 on another site, and it is flirting with $30K. What the heck?!?!
