Toyotas Gone Wild |
During my search for the Shadowagon replacement, which will most likely be another station wagon or station wagon-esque type vehicle, I came across this. I couldn't help but snap a few pics. This is a convertible FJ Cruiser by Newport Convertible Engineering. It could practically be from the factory, it was so well done. You might be thinking the same thing that I did; how do they deal with the suicide doors? With a roll cage. The conversion runs about $10K and doesn't change the warranty whatsoever. Apparently, Toyota was intrigued enough to consider it, but obviously didn't ultimately whip out the Sawzall.
Though these are and will be rare, NCE made enough of them that there are at least several hundred running around. Reading what enthusiasts on FJ Cruiser forums thought of the NCE, it surprised me that they've clearly forgotten that the FJ was a convertible, as many of them thought it looked "weird". Once again, there's no connection and a general lack of understanding of history. Regardless, most aftermarket convertibles have a tendency to be questionable at best. Not this one; it's a keeper. Looks like fun to me!
That thing is fantastic! It's probably the best droptop FJ ever. I had one of the first gens and it rusted like an Italian car.
ReplyDeleteI remember that car! Slow and ponderous, but a tank. If felt like it would keep going as the body rusted off of it.
