All true, B! Plus, the GLK/GLC is really just the tip of the iceberg with the new M-B naming system; it opens up more opportunities for heckling from enthusiasts with a brain! Humorous comparisons like the one above are going to be endless.
"Gee Elsie, why'd you buy a vehicle like that will never go off-road, is costly to maintain AND depreciates like you pushed it over a cliff?"
A buddy of mine used to drive the shuttle for a local M-B dealer. He would hear stories from the owners after they got a "sticker shock" maintenance bill. My favourite one was the lady who had bought one of the large AMG-ized SUVs, and had opted for the 20+ inch wheels (gotta look the part). She brought it in for service a few months later, with only something like 6,000 miles on it. All four tires were worn to the tread bars (funny how 500 bhp and 5,000 lbs will eat tires). Oh, and three of four wheels were damaged beyond repair by hitting pot holes. Oh, and since it was now the beginning of winter, she really needed to buy four snow tires with wheels too. The bill ran well over $10K. So, why exactly did you buy this vehicle?
Oy! Your story made me cringe. That's painful, indeed. The magic of a nameplate. Not that M-Bs aren't nice cars to drive; they are. It's just everything else that goes along with it...

I thought maybe M-B decided it was unwise to have a model that might be pronounced "Glock", but GLC is not really an improvement on that front.
ReplyDeleteI would imagine that Mazda's claim on GLC expired several years after they renamed it Protègé. "Mazda 3" is so plain....
