MINI/BMW Fined $40 Million
Let's add insult to injury to one of your favorite targets of scorn; BMW. This report details the latest information that BMW will be fined $40 million for screw-ups regarding safety recalls for the 2014 and 2015 MINI. Nice going, folks; you truly are the ultimate driving machine. You're worth every bleeding cent of the horrific premiums you charge and there's no issue with you ripping off people who actually want to keep your car past the warranty period. Now you prove that you don't care much about the safety of your customers, either. Nice.

Yeah I agree that the attitude stinks. I know the Germans aren't the only offenders, but the bad news seems to keep coming from The Fatherland.
ReplyDeleteI have been wondering how they can bring a car into compliance with side impact standards. Will they have to replace doors, or maybe replace the beams within the doors. How about filling them with impact-absorbing foam ("Oops, sorry about having to delete those operating side windows. But we replaced them with sliders, true to the original Mini heritage").
Excellent question, B. I have no idea how they could possibly re-engineer a better side impact performance in their vehicles. Why do I have the feeling they'll just try to fix it with $$$.
ReplyDeleteOh, from my experience they fix it for the least money possible. A buddy took his 2008 Impala in for the ignition switch recall. The tech came back 5 minutes later, and told him his car was ready. What the.... !?!?. The official GM "fix" was to add an extra clip ring between his ignition key and the key fob. When pressed for an explanation, the tech said that they had found that moving the mass to a slightly different distance changed the side loading on the (crappy) ignition switch, and gets GM off the hook for about 5 cents.
ReplyDeleteAs much as I've enjoyed mine over the years, it does make me wonder what is going on over there at corporate headquarters.
ReplyDeleteGerman automakers and their blatant scorn for their customers is legendary. It will be interesting to see if all of these issues that directly impact them financially will change their ways. My guess is it won't. It's too deeply embedded in their culture.
