1958 DKW MUNGA 4

 

1958 DKW MUNGA 4..."The only one in the U.S., a hybrid German Border Patrol Jeep made by the predecessor of AUDI [DKW Auto Union] in the late 50's. Has a newly rebuilt VW air cooled engine with manual trans, big Military type tires and runs great....especially in parades and is a winner in car shows. Need room in my collector car garage so am letting go this special one of a kind. Registered in NJ as a antique '68 VW and MUNGA model."

    Munga = Mehrzweck Universal Galendewagen mit Allradantrieb. Rolls right off the tongue! Neat two-stroke engines in these, originally. Too bad this one seems to have lost its motor somewhere along the way. Pretty cheap collectibles overseas, where plenty were made.

    I didn't know that it was basically an acronym, Nessa. That's extremely cool. Thanks! Do you know how heavy these were? I recall that they were made in 2WD and 4WD, too. Is that true? Geez, a two-stroke Jeep...whodathunkit.

    According to Wiki, yes there were 2WD and 4WD variants. The tongue-twisting name apparently translates to: "multi-purpose universal cross-country car with all-wheel drive".

    I'd like to see one of these in person. Maybe even drive it. I have the feeling these make The Thing look luxurious. B, did you come across the weight of these vehicles? I didn't see it listed in the Wiki article and haven't heard back from Nessa yet.

    Here is what I found about weights: "reference weights: base curb weight: 1085 kg / 2392 lbs, gross weight GVWR: 1450 kg / 3197 lbs". Frankly, that seems pretty heavy for the power available. The spec page is here:

      Thanks for the links, B! Very interesting. I agree with you; too heavy. I would have guessed closer to a ton but obviously I would have been wrong. Clearly I'll never make a living guessing weights at carnivals.
