Road & Track Presents: The Need for Speed

Back in the day.

1994 was a good year.

From Wikipedia:

Road & Track Presents: The Need for Speed, later released in Japan as Road & Track Presents: Over Drivin', is a 1994 racing video game first released on the 3DO and then ported over to DOS, PlayStation and Sega Saturn. It is the first installment released in the Need for Speed series. The premise of the game involves racing in sport cars, including several exotic models and Japanese imports.

The game was noted for its realism and audio and video commentaries. Electronic Arts teamed up with automotive magazine Road & Track to match vehicle behavior, including the mimicking of the sounds made by the vehicles' gear control levers. The game also contained precise vehicle data with spoken commentary, several "magazine style" images of each car interior and exterior and even short video clips highlighting the vehicles set to music.

  1. OMG. The narrator's voice was so irritating that I almost turned it off. And then the dbag in the game started speaking. Whoever thought that was a good idea? So funny.

  2. It is odd, but despite being a car buff and reasonably computer-oriented, I have never been able to get into driving video games. There was always something missing for me. Maybe it is just the absence of g-force and seat-of-the-pants feedback. Everything is visual, which is completely different from actual performance driving, where your whole body is engaged. Even the steering wheel controllers with simulate feedback didn't really do it for me. But I know that professional racers use the latest versions of these games for training. I wonder if that is mostly for memorizing the circuits?

  3. I agree. The feedback booths are as close as it gets, as far as I'm concerned and it's still not terribly realistic. They are better if you're a bit hammered and then it feels pretty much like the real thing. There's still no replacement for the real thing though. I know you like some of those new driving apps, K2. But it still doesn't feel real to me. Still, they aren't bad. That one you showed me the other day was pretty amazing.
