After leaving Mercedes at the very end of the 1800s, August Horch
formed a company bearing his last name. It produced several cars,
including the 853A pictured below. Production numbers are somewhere
around 350 and the company is notable for being the first to introduce
eight cylinder engines into series production. Horch was forced out of the
company and formed Audi (Audiwerke GmbH) but later returned to the
company that bore his name as part of the Auto Union merger. These days, Horch cars
are worth millions.
